Sample Space : Practical Experiments for Teaching Sampling
نویسنده
چکیده
A traditional view of statistics is that it is numerical detective work. An important part of this detective work is the collection of the data which will form the basis of inferences and action. Selecting a sample is a key activity in statistics. If the data collected are defective in some way for instance, because of bias then the inferences and actions based on them can be seriously flawed. I believe that every course in statistics, even one at an introductory level, should include some inferential statistics. This can be presented in the usual formal way via estimation and hypothesis testing. Alternatively, it can be presented in an informal way. For instance, general questions about a situation can be posed on the basis of a histogram of sample values. Whichever approach is used, it is then necessary to introduce some of the ideas of sampling as a method of checking on the plausibility of the inferences. 4

Conceptual Issues in Quantifying Unusualness and Conceiving Stochastic Experiments: Insights from Students’ Experiences in Designing Sampling Simulations1
This article reports on a classroom teaching experiment that engaged a group of high school students in designing sampling simulations within a computer microworld. The simulation-design activities aimed to foster students’ abilities to conceive of contextual situations as stochastic experiments, and to engage them with the logic of hypothesis testing. This scheme of ideas involves imagining a ...
متن کاملUsing Available Resources to Enhance the Teaching of Hydrogeology
Teaching the concepts and fundamentals of hydrology and hydrogeology, particularly to undergraduates who have limited field experience, presents a challenge. Many innovations from working models to computer simulations have been used to improve visualization of the subject and to add a practical applied component to training. Recently, as a result of a partnership with private firms, two monito...
متن کاملA Course on Sample Surveys for Statistics Students
Statisticians should be involved at all stages of sample surveys and courses on surveys need to reflect this by covering both theoretical and practical aspects. Teaching methods could include some hands-on experience, directed reading, and use of software designed for teaching or professional use, as well as more traditional lecturing. Suggestions are given for a course of about fifty hours. IN...
متن کاملImprecise k - space sampling and central brightening
In real-world sampling of k-space data, one generally makes a stochastic error not only in the value of the sample but in the effective position of the drawn sample. We refer to the latter as imprecise sampling and apply this concept to the fourier-based acquisition of magnetic resonance data. The analysis shows that the effect of such imprecisely sampled data accounts for contributions to nois...
